Brand Book: St. Comgall’s

Over the last eight months we’ve been working closely with the brilliant team at St. Comgall’s (Divis Street, Belfast) to develop their brand identity and assets.

St. Comgall’s was previously a school but had been derelict for many years – affected also by the ‘Troubles’. The old school lay in ruins; however, through the hard work of the Falls Community Council the former school has been reinvented into a state of the art work and event space. 

The building now houses office space for rent, an amazing event space, a coffee shop and very soon will host a museum illustrating the history of the Northern Irish ‘Troubles’.

The first time I visited the venue I was blown away at how beautiful it was – the architect maintained many of the old school features which adds to the character of the space. The team were keen for the brand to reference the hertiage of the building – nothing ultra modern. Whilst exploring the building I stumbled across an old hand-drawn advertising board which had been used in the 1950’s to promote bingo nights. The hand-drawn type stuck in my head, and it became clear this board would become the catalyst for the brand identity design.

The hand-drawn type was photographed, redrawn into a St. Comgall’s typeface and used as the main word mark for the brand identity.

Other elements from the building also inspired the brand design; the triangular dome inspired the use of triangles throughout the brand as graphic devices. Old jotter books were used to inspire the tag-line design –the use of these lines also flows throughout the graphic design for the brand. We also created a line drawing of the building frontage which is also used throughout the brand identity.

We continue to work with the team at St. Comgall’s to develop and evolve their brand as the business grows.
